About Me

Sometime in the early 2000s, I purchased my first cell phone that had a camera on it. As I was taking photos, people kept complimenting the photos, saying how beautiful they were and how talented I was. I just thought "it's a cell phone picture". After a couple of years of everyone's compliments going to my head, I bought myself one of those fancy pocket cameras. I started exploring more, taking more photos, and the compliments increased 10-fold. I even had people ask for prints of my photos. And again, I just kept thinking "it's just a pocket camera". So in 2007, I made the splurge and bought a "real" camera. Within the first year, I had a photo of mine used as a cover photo on a magazine (Minnesota Explorer). Two years in, I had photos of mine used in print advertisement that ended up going all over the world. It was crazy then, it was crazy now as I typed it. I've been blessed with a good eye and a creative side that loves vibrant colors and always creating something new. And I am very blessed that all of you have chosen to follow me on this photographic journey of mine.

My goal, when presenting an image, is to invite the viewer into a moment in time that has touched me emotionally. Sometimes it's gorgeous light, other times it's the feeling I get when casting my eyes upon it. The images here on my website provoke feelings of love, of beauty, of wonder at how anything could be this magnificent!

To that end, I fully utilize all of the tools available to me: camera, current photo editing software, and of course a large high definition computer monitor to view progress. I am an artist in every sense of the word. As a painter would use reference photos, I use RAW images directly from the camera. And, just as a painter ads and subtracts with paint and a brush, I add and subtract with software editing tools. Maybe natural highlights need to be brought down, maybe light needs to be added to the shadows. For that, I make no apologies. The editing process allows me to convey the emotions that a moment invoked in me, in a way that an unedited, RAW image simply cannot.

The process is both technical and artistic. When shooting in the field, I do everything in my power to capture tack-sharp, color-saturated, technically strong images. Experience and up to date equipment are imperative. Once captured, the artist in me takes over. Blending images, taking the best from each, this is the artistic element. Maybe cloud formations taken four minutes prior go best with the vivid colors of a later image. In the end, I need my vision - my feelings - to be accurately represented in a digital file.
