This was the very first photograph that started as a concept before I went out and made it. The image of the iconic Cherry Spoon in Minneapolis covered in snow crept into my mind. And it happened as I was shoveling snow. Before this, all the photos that I shot were organic. By that I mean I walked around with my camera hoping to find something. But this time, the image came to me before going out with the camera.
It was maybe a week after having the image of this snow-covered cherry popped into my head, and we had a heavy snowfall. The clouds cleared out after the storm leaving the sun to shine on the freshly fallen snow. I grabbed my camera and headed over to the Walker Art Center. It is about a 10-15 minute drive from my house to the Minneapolis Sculpture Gardens. A fact that makes it a shame that I don't get there more often.
I arrived at the sculpture garden, and went out and trudged through the snow to get to the cherry and spoon. When I arrived, there were a few people playing on it. Which is just stupid. It also cleared off some of the snow from the base of the spoon. I thought for a second of going up to it and fixing that by putting more snow on it, but I left it be. I then fired off a few shots, changed my angle, and fired off a few more. But I had my shot on the very first take. It was exactly how I had seen it in my head. I was pretty dang happy about it.
This photo later went on to be the cover photo of a local magazine called Explore Minnesota. That was a first for me and made me a very happy and excited man. It was wonderful hearing from so many friends when they saw it. Now let me tell you, when I saw that cover for the very first time, that was pure bliss. It is a feeling that is difficult to describe except to say it was something way more than wonderful.
I hope you enjoy my Local Art for Sale Minneapolis photo, and please feel free to share it!
