I have made the nearly 3-hour drive up to the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park many times over my life. I have never seen the lighthouse beacon on though. That changed in the summer of 2009. The lighthouse was celebrating its 150 year birthday and had a few occasions where they lit the beacon.
On those days, there was a crazy amount of photographers at the park. The entire beach littered with tripods and camera gear. And there was an audible sound of camera shutters going off when the beacon was lit.
The entire evening was overcast, but as the sun was setting, the clouds broke right on the western horizon. That created some vibrant colors in the clouds around the Split Rock Lighthouse. First, they were bathed in yellows and oranges, and then came the pinks and purples. And as the later colors were taking over the sky, the beacon came on. The sounds of shutters firing was almost deafening. Well, ok, it wasn't that loud, but us photographers got really excited by it all.
I loved being there witnessing it, and I am glad I brought home some wonderful photographs. I hope you enjoy this lighthouse photograph, and please feel free to share it!
