I saw a photograph of this tree months before I ever stood in front of it myself. I didn't know its story or its history, just that something about it stuck with me, and that a foggy morning might turn it into something magical.
So one morning, when I woke up to fog rolling in, I got in the car. The twenty-minute drive to Medicine Lake got thicker with fog the closer I got, until "magical" turned into something closer to a dream. I didn't have to wait for the light or the weather to cooperate; I only had to find the way I wanted to frame it. The duck drifting into the reflection was a happy accident.
This became Whispers of Serenity, and it's one of my favorite images I've ever made, a rare departure from the skylines and landmarks I usually photograph, made of nothing but form, symmetry, and quiet.
This year, it was entered and rejected for the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Building. Rather than let the rejection own this image, I'm releasing it as a small, hand-signed limited edition.
