Wings spread nearly ninety feet wide and standing over three stories tall, "The Calling" rises against a big Minnesota sky outside Allianz Field in St. Paul. The massive stainless steel loon, with tens of thousands of hand-cut metal feathers catching the light, greets visitors to the home of Minnesota United FC, affectionately known as The Loons.
"The Calling" is one of the largest sculptures in the western hemisphere, and seeing it in person is something else entirely. Created by internationally renowned Scottish sculptor Andy Scott — also known for Scotland's towering Kelpies — the loon stands roughly 32 feet tall with an 89-foot wingspan, assembled from over 50,000 individually hand-crafted stainless steel feathers. It was commissioned by the McGuire Family Foundation for United Village, at the corner of Snelling and University avenues, and has quickly become one of the most photographed landmarks in the Twin Cities.
I shot this straight-on from the front, letting the wings stretch out symmetrically against the clouds and blue sky, with a bit of the Allianz Field skyline visible through the gaps beneath each wing. The loon is, of course, the Minnesota state bird, and it's also the inspiration for the nickname of the soccer club that calls this stadium home — "The Loons."
