There's a version of Minneapolis most people never see.

Not the daytime skyline. Not the summer festivals or the river walk in the afternoon sun. This is the city after midnight, quiet, lit from within, and built like it means it.

Carlyle at Midnight was photographed from the Mississippi River corridor looking northwest toward downtown. The 3rd Street / Central Avenue Bridge stretches across the lower frame, its lamp posts tracing a perfect vanishing line into the heart of the city. Above it all, the Carlyle Tower commands the composition, one of Minneapolis's most distinctive residential skyscrapers, its setback crown and ornamental lighting giving it an almost Art Deco authority against the night sky.

Black and white was the only choice for this image. Color would have competed. Monochrome lets the architecture breathe; every lit window, every carved stone detail, every reflected glow off glass becomes part of the structure of the image itself.

This print works beautifully in large format. The detail in the Carlyle's façade, the depth of the skyline behind it, and the geometry of the bridge all reward size.
