April 21st, 2016, was a day that changed everything. For 34 years, I had been a dedicated Prince fan, living in Minneapolis, a city that always felt intertwined with his music and spirit. I was fortunate to have spent countless evenings with him—whether it was at dance parties, intimate rehearsals, or unforgettable private performances. Prince’s presence was larger than life, and for those of us lucky enough to experience it firsthand, it felt like he’d never leave.

But on that fateful day, he did. Prince left this world, and in a strange, unexpected way, the entire world seemed to pause and honor him. The color purple—a color that had always been his—spread everywhere. For a moment, it felt like everyone, not just his die-hard fans, was mourning and celebrating him. Minneapolis, his hometown, was no different. The whole city turned purple in his honor.

That evening, I grabbed my camera and headed out to capture what would be one of the most surreal moments I’ve ever experienced as a photographer. I found myself on an old railroad bridge that spans the Mississippi River, just east of the 35W bridge. The skies were overcast and heavy, a perfect reflection of the collective mood—somber yet filled with reverence. The city's skyline was bathed in shades of purple, with the 35W bridge illuminated in a soft glow and the Guthrie Theater’s reader board standing out in tribute.

As I stood there, alongside other local photographers, the air felt different. It was a night of celebration and mourning, all wrapped in one. The familiar skyline took on new meaning as the lights came on and the city draped itself in purple. The deep, rich hue contrasted with the brooding sky, creating a scene that felt both melancholy and hopeful—a reminder that while Prince may have left, his legacy would never fade.

This photo captures that bittersweet moment. The city, bathed in purple, honoring the man who had given it so much. It was a night I will never forget, and this image serves as a tribute to Prince, the icon, and Minneapolis, the city that loved him.
