Cinderella's Castle Sunset - William Drew

Have you ever experienced the magic of Walt Disney World? The sprawling theme park ignites childlike wonder in all who visit, and photographers like myself are constantly on the lookout for ways to capture that special Disney pixie dust. 

One of the most iconic locations within the park is Cinderella's Castle. This majestic structure is a timeless symbol of hope, dreams, and happily ever after. For photographers, it's a perennial favorite. But sometimes, even the most photographed landmarks can surprise you with a scene so magical, it takes your breath away. 

That's exactly what happened to me on a recent trip to the Magic Kingdom. The day had been a washout, shrouded in a blanket of dreary grey clouds. As evening approached, I was enjoying a ride on the People Mover when I spotted a sliver of clear sky peeking through the western horizon. A flicker of hope ignited – could this be the chance for a spectacular sunset? 

With renewed determination, I exited the ride and made a beeline for the bridge by Cinderella Castle, the prime spot to capture the castle bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. And sure enough, the sky erupted in a blaze of color – vibrant oranges, fiery reds, and streaks of lavender that painted the clouds in a breathtaking display. 

Here's the kicker: I was the only one there enjoying this magical scene! Usually, the bridge is crammed with other guests all vying for the perfect sunset shot. But this time, everyone else had their cameras pointed in the opposite direction. 

Intrigued, I turned around to discover the reason for their attention: a magnificent double rainbow stretched across the sky, its vibrant colors illuminating perfectly. 

In that split second, I realized I had a choice to make. I could continue photographing the sunset, or I could try to capture the castle framed by the rainbow. The 2nd option would require me to grab my gear and race to the Liberty Square side of the castle, which I wasn't sure I had the time to do before the rainbow faded. Ultimately, I opted for the sunset, a decision I continue to debate. 

While I am thrilled with the way "Cinderella's Castle Sunset" turned out, a part of me can't help but wonder what the image with the rainbow would have looked like. Perhaps it would have been even more magical? 

This experience serves as a reminder of the fleeting beauty of nature, and the importance of being present in the moment. Sometimes, the most magical photos are captured not through meticulous planning, but by happy chance and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
