The Story Behind the Shot: Once Upon a Sunset

The Story Behind the Shot: Once Upon a Sunset For fifty years, Cinderella Castle has stood at the heart of the Magic Kingdom looking more or less the way the whole world pictures it, pale gray stone, blue spires, that familiar fairy-tale silhouette you could draw from memory. And then, for one brief stretch of time, Disney did something I never expected. They dressed it up.
To celebrate Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary, the castle was given a makeover, soft pinks, deep royal blues, and shimmering champagne-gold accents along the spires. The first time I saw it in person, I stopped walking. I'm a photographer who's spent his whole career chasing color and light, drawn to the scenes that glow a little brighter than the rest, and here was the most iconic building in the park practically begging to be photographed. It didn't look like a castle anymore. It looked like a jewel.
I waited for the light. That's most of what this job actually is — waiting, watching the sky, knowing the difference between a good photograph and the one worth carrying home is usually about twenty minutes of patience at the right time of day. As the Florida afternoon started to let go, the sky behind the castle began to turn. Peach near the horizon, cooling to lavender overhead. The lamps along the walkway flickered on. And for a few minutes, the whole scene settled into that golden-hour stillness photographers spend their lives hoping to catch; warm, calm, impossibly romantic, with those jeweled spires catching the very last of the sun.
I made the frame. And then the light moved on, the way it always does.
Here's the part that gives this image its weight for me, and the reason I find myself coming back to it. Those colors are gone now. Not changed for the season, not rotated out for a new promotion, gone. The castle has been returned to its classic look, which means that exact view, the 50th Anniversary palette lit by a setting sun, can't be photographed again by me or anyone else. What started as just another beautiful evening at the Magic Kingdom turned out to be a record of a chapter that closed for good.
That's the strange and wonderful thing about photographing places that change. You almost never know, in the moment, which ordinary evening is going to become the last one of its kind. You just keep showing up, keep waiting for the light, and trust that some of those frames will turn out to matter more later than they did at the time. This is one of mine. It's a sunset, sure, but it's also a small, specific piece of Disney history that only exists now because someone happened to be standing in the right spot with a camera while the sky did its thing.
I named it Once Upon a Sunset. It felt right. Every fairy tale opens with once upon a time, a moment set apart, already a little out of reach, and that's exactly what this was. A moment. Held still. Kept.
If you'd like to keep this one on your wall, Once Upon a Sunset is available as a print in several finishes. It comes alive on metal especially, the gloss carries that sunset glow the way the evening actually felt. But mostly, I just hope you enjoy the story behind it.
