Silent Reflections: Minimalism in Fog
Sep 14, 2025
Whispers of Serenity — A minimalist black-and-white photograph of a foggy morning at Medicine Lake in Plymouth, MN, where reflection and stillness meet.
Minimalism in art is about more than simplicity; it’s about clarity. It’s the act of removing distraction so that the essential remains. On a recent fog-filled morning at Medicine Lake, I created a series of photographs that embrace this idea fully.
At first glance, these images are quiet. They feature docks, reflections, and water swallowed by fog. But the silence is deceptive, look closer, and there’s tension in the emptiness. The horizon has been erased. The fog doesn’t soften the scene so much as it consumes it, leaving only shapes, contrast, and space for your imagination to wander.
This is where minimalism thrives. By stripping away the familiar, trees, skylines, movement, we’re left with the bones of the image: form, line, reflection. Each photograph becomes more about what isn’t there than what is. In that way, the fog becomes both subject and canvas.
The Power of Black and White
While I often work in bold, vibrant color, this series demanded a different treatment. In black and white, the photographs feel timeless, grounded in the fine art tradition of photographers like Ansel Adams. There’s a purity to the grayscale palette that enhances the mood; it allows light, shadow, and shape to carry the full weight of the composition.
Comparisons to Adams aren’t about recreating his sweeping landscapes of Yosemite or the Sierra Nevada. Instead, it’s about channeling the same reverence for stillness, patience, and atmosphere. These fog-draped images echo that sensibility: the idea that sometimes, less truly is more.
Minimalism as Mood
In my work, mood has always been the thread, whether in the neon glow of a city skyline at night or the rich colors of a Minnesota autumn. These photographs, however, show that mood doesn’t need vibrancy to resonate. Here, mood is conveyed through absence. Through reflection. Through a haunting kind of silence that sits in the empty spaces of the frame.
Minimalism isn’t about removing life, it’s about revealing it. Each photograph invites you to slow down, breathe, and sit with the stillness. To imagine what lies beyond the horizon swallowed by fog.
A Study in Quiet
This series from Medicine Lake isn’t about place as much as it is about feeling. The fog turned the lake into something unrecognizable, and in doing so, it revealed a new way of seeing. These images are studies in quiet, pieces that speak not with noise or color, but with restraint.
For me, they represent another side of my artistic journey. A reminder that the city lights and the vivid colors I often capture are just one language of mood. Fog and reflection are another. Both tell the same story: how a fleeting moment can hold a lasting emotional truth.
