There are certain parts of a city you assume you’ll always come back to. 

For me, the Minneapolis skyline had always been that subject. But the lakes, the very thing that gives the city its identity, had quietly slipped into the background of my work. Late last summer, I realized I had been overlooking something essential. Minneapolis isn’t just defined by its buildings. It’s defined by the water that reflects them. 

So I went to Lake Harriet with a simple plan. 

No big production. 

No complex concept. 

Just the skyline rising softly above the lake at twilight. 

The light was exactly what I had hoped for, warm tones fading into evening, the buildings beginning to glow as the day let go. I had my camera locked in for long exposures, letting the scene settle into that calm, polished look that nighttime photography demands. 

And then, out of nowhere, everything changed.

A sailboat entered the frame. 

Not slowly. Not conveniently. 

Fast. 

I could see immediately where it was headed. If it stayed on its path, it would cut perfectly between me and the skyline, right through the heart of the composition. 

But my settings weren’t built for motion. 

I had seconds. There was no time to think through it. Just react. 

I quickly adjusted. Shutter speed, exposure, everything, knowing I’d only get one chance before the moment was gone. 

And then… it happened. 

The sailboat slipped into place, perfectly aligned, sharp against the water, framed by the skyline behind it. 

Gone just as quickly as it arrived.

Before that moment, this was simply a photograph of a city and a lake. 

After it, it became something else entirely.
