Story Behind the Shot: Crystal Palace Sunset
May 17, 2026
There are some sunsets at Walt Disney World that are beautiful.
And then there are the rare ones that completely take over the evening.
This was one of those nights.
Most evenings when I visit Magic Kingdom, I naturally find myself near Cinderella Castle as sunset approaches. There is something unforgettable about watching the sky ignite behind the castle as the lights slowly begin to glow throughout the park. On this particular December evening, I had already captured what would later become Golden Kingdom, expecting that moment to be the highlight of the night.
But the sky kept getting better.
Instead of slowing down, I started chasing the sunset through the park.
After photographing Cinderella Castle, I made my way toward Crystal Palace, where the warm sunset colors were beginning to reflect across the water and dance across the windows of the restaurant. The glow in the sky was perfectly balanced between day and night. Some of the lamps around the area had started to turn on, while the remaining daylight still illuminated the palm trees, bridges, and reflections surrounding the building.
For a few brief moments, everything felt suspended between two worlds.
That is what drew me to this scene. I have always loved how Crystal Palace feels slightly removed from the chaos of Magic Kingdom. Even on busy evenings, this area can feel peaceful compared to the energy surrounding the castle hub just a few steps away. On this night, the reflections in the water and the fiery December sky transformed the entire area into something almost dreamlike.
After capturing this image, I kept following the sunset.
That is something I had never done, and haven't done since.
Normally, once sunset fades, I settle into a slower rhythm and wait for the nighttime atmosphere to take over the park. But on this evening, it felt like every direction held another incredible scene waiting to happen. The adventure continued into Adventureland, where I photographed the sunset behind the Magic Carpets of Aladdin ride for what became Adventureland Sunset. From there, I continued deeper into the park and captured Golden Plunder near Pirates of the Caribbean as the last traces of color disappeared from the sky.
Together, these images became a series unlike anything else I have photographed at Walt Disney World.
One unforgettable sunset.
One continuous journey through Magic Kingdom.
One night where the park seemed to transform with every few steps.
While each image from the series tells its own story, Crystal Palace Sunset remains one of my favorites because of how calm it felt in the middle of all that movement. It was the pause between adventures. The quiet breath before continuing deeper into the park.
And like so many Disney evenings, it was gone almost as quickly as it appeared.
