Story Behind the Shot: Finding My Happily Ever After

Find Your Happily Ever After Disney Fireworks Photograph

Some photographs are carefully planned. Others are the reward at the end of a long, chaotic day.

This image, Find Your Happily Ever After, was definitely the latter.

The day started like many of my visits to the Magic Kingdom. I walked down Main Street, U.S.A., and made my way toward Adventureland, expecting a fairly normal day in the park. Within minutes, though, it became clear this was going to be anything but normal.

As I entered Adventureland, I noticed something I hadn’t seen in years: a line for the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. Not just a small gathering either, the queue had stretched all the way out into the walkway. When I looked up toward the treehouse itself, every part of it seemed packed with guests.

I genuinely can’t remember the last time I saw that attraction with a wait. It might have been sometime back in the 1980s.

A few steps later, I walked past The Enchanted Tiki Room and saw the same thing happening there. A line spilling out into the walkway. People actually waiting to get in.

That’s when it hit me: this was going to be one of those days.

The kind of day where every ride has a long line, every walkway feels crowded, and the best strategy is simply to slow down, wander, and enjoy the atmosphere. So that’s exactly what I did. Instead of chasing attractions, I spent the afternoon people watching, exploring the corners of the park, and letting the day unfold however it wanted to.

Later in the afternoon I found myself walking through Tomorrowland when I spotted something else I had never seen before. The Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor had a line so long that a cast member was standing outside holding a sign that read: “Line Starts Here.”

At that point, there was no doubt. This was one of the busiest days I had ever experienced at the Magic Kingdom.

As evening approached, I started thinking about where I wanted to watch the fireworks. As busy as the park was, I did not want to deal with the crowd that would be smushed together in front of Cinderella Castle. So, my new plan was simple: grab dinner at Tomorrowland Terrace, then wander over toward the Tangled-themed area in Fantasyland.

Dinner finished about 90 minutes before the fireworks, and I began walking through Fantasyland toward those famous Tangled restrooms. But as I passed Storybook Treats, I saw cast members beginning to block off the walkway behind Cinderella Castle.

I was the first person cut off.

Apparently the area was already too full, and they weren’t allowing anyone else through. My route had just disappeared.

So I had to turn around, head back to the front of the castle, cross the chaos of Main Street, and circle through Liberty Square just to reach the spot I had originally planned to walk to in a few minutes.

It took 88 minutes.

I finally arrived moments before the show started.

Despite everything; the crowds, the detours, the endless weaving through people; I had made it.

The first fireworks launched into the sky, I let out a sigh of relief, and I started clicking away on my camera while watching the sky light up.

Sometimes the path to the perfect photograph isn’t easy.

But if you keep moving forward, stay patient, and embrace the adventure…

You might just find your happily ever after.
