St Croix Northern Lights March 2023 4 - William Drew

Have you ever witnessed the breathtaking beauty of the aurora borealis? Also known as the northern lights, this natural phenomenon paints the night sky with vibrant colors of green, blue, violet, and red. For photographers, capturing this celestial ballet is a true challenge and a bucket list item. 

"St. Croix Northern Lights March 2023 4," captures the ethereal beauty of the aurora borealis dancing over the St. Croix River, which acts as the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. This majestic photo was taken on March 23rd, 2023, at Sunrise River Landing. 

On that particular night, a powerful geomagnetic storm, classified as a G4, created an unforgettable light show. The storm was so strong that people as far south as New Mexico and Arizona reported seeing the aurora borealis. 

I described the storm as "simply beautiful" rather than severe, the storm produced an incredible display of lights. After taking enjoying the show for an hour, I began the hour long drive home. However, upon reaching my driveway, I was astonished to see the lights return even stronger, illuminating the night sky even with the city lights of Minneapolis and I-94 all around me. If I had stayed up into the wee hours of the morning, I could have seen and photographed some incredible views, but I am still quite happy with what I did see and photograph.
