"Reflections of Spaceship Earth" is a quiet tribute to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, the beloved nighttime spectacular that ran at Epcot from 1999 to 2019. The show is gone now, but in December 2020 I found something I had never noticed before at Epcot: a perfect, mirror-still reflection of Spaceship Earth glowing in violet and magenta against the deep blue night sky.
For twenty years, IllumiNations ended every Epcot night with light, fire, and music on that lagoon. This is my version of that sendoff.

The title "Reflections of Spaceship Earth" is a deliberate nod to IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, the nighttime spectacular that closed out every Epcot evening from 1999 until its final performance on September 1, 2019. For two decades, it was the emotional crescendo of a day at Epcot: the globe rising from the lagoon, the torches, the music, the fireworks. Then it was gone.
I captured this photograph in December 2020, more than a year after IllumiNations took its final bow. I had been to Epcot countless times before, but that evening I stopped at a vantage point I had somehow never fully seen. Maybe a building had come down and opened the sightline. Maybe I had just always been rushing somewhere else. But there it was: Spaceship Earth blazing in purple and magenta, reflected so precisely in the still water below that it looked like a second sphere had formed beneath the surface. The monorail beam cut cleanly through the frame. The trees glowed green at the edges. The sky above was that deep, specific blue that only exists about twenty minutes after sunset in Florida.
I set up my Sony a7RIII and let the long exposure do what long exposures do, smooth the water to glass, and pull every facet of the geodesic sphere down into the reflection.
This one is for the Epcot fans who stood at the World Showcase Lagoon every closing night and felt something. The show is retired. Spaceship Earth is still there, still glowing, still reflecting.
