This was shot from the Stillwater Lift Bridge, looking south down the St. Croix River, Wisconsin's bluffs on the left, Minnesota's on the right, and the Stillwater Crossing bridge cutting a clean line between them in the distance. It's the kind of scene that only really comes together on a good summer day: blue sky, scattered clouds, and just enough boat traffic to give the whole river a sense of motion.
There's something fitting about capturing this spot from an old lift bridge, looking toward its modern replacement, two very different ways of getting across the same river, both still very much part of daily life here.

This is the St. Croix Crossing, a four-lane bridge connecting Oak Park Heights, Minnesota, to Wisconsin, which opened to traffic in 2017. It was built about a mile downstream from downtown Stillwater to relieve traffic from the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge — the very bridge I was standing on to capture this shot. That older lift bridge, built in 1931, now carries only pedestrians and cyclists, giving photographers a perfect, car-free vantage point looking straight down the St. Croix River toward its modern successor.
