Some photographs are planned. This one was earned.
Getting a crescent moon in the right position above a city skyline requires knowing your vantage point, knowing the lunar calendar, and being willing to show up at the exact right moment with your gear ready. Last August, all of those things aligned at the Tower Hill Park overlook, one of the most dramatic elevated views of downtown Minneapolis, and this image is the result.
The Wells Fargo Center anchors the left side of the frame, its warm amber lighting a signature presence on the Minneapolis skyline. To the right, the 5th Street Towers glow with their distinctive teal neon banding, a quietly iconic detail that locals recognize immediately. Above it all, the crescent moon sits in the dusky upper sky, perfectly weighted in the composition, as if the city had been arranged beneath it.
The color palette here is what sets this image apart; the tension between the warm amber of the Wells Fargo Center, the cool teal of the 5th Street Towers, and the soft violet-gray of the dusk sky gives the print a richness that rewards a second look. This is not a typical skyline photograph. It's a moment that won't repeat itself in quite this way again.
Large format is where this image truly comes alive. The gradations in the sky, the layered glow of the city, and the fine detail of the crescent all have room to breathe at size.
Choose your medium:
- Fine Art Paper — Preserves the subtle sky gradations and warm tonal range beautifully
- Canvas — Adds warmth and texture that complement the amber and teal palette
- Metal — The teal neon and city lights absolutely sing on a high-gloss metal surface
- Acrylic — Museum-quality depth and luminosity, ideal for contemporary spaces
Why this image:
- A genuinely rare capture, crescent moon perfectly positioned above the downtown skyline
- Shot from Tower Hill Park, one of Minneapolis's most dramatic elevated vantage points
- Recognizable landmarks, including the Wells Fargo Center and 5th Street Towers
- Rich, layered color palette that works in both residential and commercial settings
