I drove up to Tower Hill Park that summer evening with one goal: to catch the crescent moon as it set behind the Minneapolis skyline. The park, home to the historic Witch's Hat Water Tower, sits on one of the highest points in the city and looks straight across at downtown. On a clear night, with the moon in the right place, it's hard to imagine a better vantage point in the Twin Cities. I came away with a whole series of images that evening, but this is the frame I kept coming back to.

A thin sliver of crescent moon hangs to the right of the towers while the heart of downtown lights up below, one building catching warm amber light, the rest stacked in cool blues and whites, and the soft glow of U.S. Bank Stadium anchoring the lower edge. It's the kind of scene that lasts only a few minutes before the moon slips out of frame, which is part of what makes it feel so quiet.

What I love about this image is the contrast: the permanence of the skyline against the fleeting, fragile arc of the moon. It's downtown Minneapolis, the way it actually feels late on a clear summer night; alive but calm, monumental but intimate.
