Winter Bridges in Stillwater is a quiet winter study of history, change, and place.
Captured along the frozen St. Croix River in Stillwater, Minnesota, this black and white photograph features two bridges spanning the river that divides Minnesota and Wisconsin. In the foreground stands the iconic Stillwater Lift Bridge, now preserved as a pedestrian bridge after decades of service. Behind it rises the St. Croix Crossing, the modern replacement built to carry traffic past the town.
My original intent was to focus solely on the lift bridge, a structure deeply woven into Stillwater’s identity. But once I realized I could include both bridges in a single frame, I made a small adjustment to let the old and the new coexist together. What emerged was a visual contrast between eras: steel and structure, preservation and progress.
The newer bridge is elegant and necessary, yet its presence has subtly changed Stillwater, as much of the traffic now bypasses Main Street. This image reflects that moment in time, not as commentary, but as observation.
