Como Lakeside Pavilion has anchored the shore of Como Lake since 1905, when St. Paul replaced an earlier wooden bandstand with this grand reinforced-concrete structure — funded in part by the streetcar company that ran a line through the park. Architect Clarence H. Johnston based the design on the vision of park superintendent Frederick Nussbaumer, and it quickly became the social heart of the park, hosting summer band concerts and doubling as a warming house for ice skaters in winter. City architect Clarence "Cap" Wigington oversaw WPA-funded repairs in the late 1930s, and when the aging building faced demolition in the early 1990s, strong community pushback led the city to rebuild it as a near-exact replica using the original blueprints. Today it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Como Regional Park — one of the busiest parks in the state.
